Clipped Wings
How often do you have carefree laughs?
When are you going to let your dreams breathe?
This world tells you,
"Show me the heart unfettered by foolish dreams and I'll show you a happy man."
You have to reply with
"But only in their dreams can men be truly free. 'Twas always thus and always thus will be."
Now you may think that 19th century literature has nothing to do with medical and engineering.
But let me in you on a secret:
We don't read and write poetry because it’s cute.
We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion.
Medicine law business engineering: these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain lives.
Poetry, beauty, romance, love : these are what we stay alive for.
Romance, love, poetry and beauty are what we are alive for. And you say you are afraid to fall in love. You are afraid to end up with a broken heart and memories but the nature of our soul is to love. How long can you resist it? And to think of it, why do you want to?
Life is not about work, money, success and fame. Life is about love, beauty, joy and sorrow.
Conformity and the difficulty in maintaining your own beliefs in the face of others...
As a child you might have questioned why can't the bird swim or the fish fly.As you grew up, you learnt not to ask such questions. As you grew up , you learnt to walk with the world at it's pace on the path laid out before you, confined yourself to the beliefs of the world and got applauded for doing it well.
Robert Frost said,
"Two roads diverged in the wood and I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference."
You must find your own voice. The longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all.
You must believe that your beliefs are unique your own, even though others might think them odd or unpopular, even though the herd goes, 'that is ba-aa-aad'.
Isn't the idea of education system to learn to think for yourself?
Sometimes I stand on my desk to look at the world differently. Everything looks different from up here.
Just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in another way. Even though it seems silly and wrong, you must try. A different perspective is all you need at times.
At the age of five, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
What happened?
At the age of ten, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
What happened?
At the age of fifteen, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
What happened?
Now, what do you dream of growing up to be?
Sometimes ,the society doesn't just kill your dreams, it kills you too.
Don't get me wrong. I am not saying the society and the world is all bad. I want you to realize you can make your world whatever you want it to be. You can paint your sky pink and you can make your fish fly.
"I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately..
I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life!
To put to rout all that was not life...
And not, when I came to die, discover
that I had not lived..."
"O me O life of the questions of these recurring
Of the endless trains of the faithless
Of cities filled with foolish
What good amid these O me O life?
Answer: That you are here,
That life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on and
you may contribute a verse.
That the powerful play goes on and
you may contribute a verse."
~ Walt Whitman
Inspired By the 'Dead Poet's Society'.
I strongly recommend reading the book or watching the movie. I have one word to describe it: Beauty.
